Cargo Barriers: Construction, Uses and Installation

by

A cargo barrier is an accessory that can be installed on a vehicle in order to carry domestic animals or loads in the back of a car. Some of the other terms that this device may go by include mesh partitions, dog guards, mesh grille, load separators, and pet barriers.

Construction/Uses

Cargo barriers can come in many different forms, but typically will consist of metal that is fabricated with mesh. The purpose of this type of barrier is to keep the items that are in the trunk or rear end of the car from entering the front part of the car.

There are both universal and custom fit cargo barriers available. One of the advantages of using an universal fit cargo barrier is that it can be transferred from car to car without being modified. Universal cargo barriers are usually cheaper as well. However, universal fit cargo barriers are at a disadvantage as they may not fit as snugly as they should, which lowers their safety rating.

A custom fit cargo barrier is designed to fit exclusively in the vehicle of choice. With the new designs of car safety features such as airbags, a custom fit cargo barrier is typically needed. The custom made cargo barrier will fit snugly and are typically made out of higher quality materials. The custom built barrier will generally last longer and provide the most safety.

Cargo barriers can help protect passengers in the event of a crash as well by acting as a barrier to keep large items or pets from flying forward should the vehicle be involved in an accident.

There are many applications for a cargo barrier to be used. For example, this type of barrier can be used in taxis, when traveling with large amounts of luggage or other loads, when transporting fleet vehicle equipment, for camping equipment, and many other items. The cargo barrier allows an individual to pack the load area higher than the height of the seat, maximizing the amount of space that can be used for transport.

Installing a Cargo Barrier

There are several types of cargo barriers available. Some are designed with the option of being mounted in different positions within the vehicle, such as behind the back seats or behind the front seats. This allows the back seats to fold down and offers more room for transport of larger items.

Most cargo compartments cannot be opened from within, which makes them dangerous for both children and adults as they may become entrapped. For this reason, there is often the option of a removable window being installed in order to allow the individual to reach the passenger compartment. Some cargo barriers often come with and escape hammer to allow an individual to break a rear window if they become stuck.

There are currently several manufacturers that offer cargo barriers for different types of vehicles. Both universal and custom made cargo barriers can be purchased from car manufacturers as well as some vehicle accessory specialty stores.
